Physical Education
St. Matthew’s physical education program stretches each student intellectually and physically. We encourage students to learn healthy habits and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, while developing a sense of maturity and self confidence through movement. Teamwork and sportsmanship are highly encouraged and promoted during every lesson. Motor skills, individual sports skills, and modified games are emphasized, along with a variety of fun fitness activities.
We offer a variety of indoor and outdoor activities in our gymnasium, the Meadow, which is an expansive playing field, a large swimming pool, and a dedicated rooftop sports area.
Lower School (K-4)
Our program emphasizes coordination, motor development, and self discovery for Kindergarteners and First Graders. In Grades 2-4, students continue to develop basic locomotor, coordination, and social skills while practicing sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership skills through participation in soccer, volleyball, basketball, and other activities.
Middle School (5-8)
Middle School students participate in a wider range of activities that promote self confidence and leadership skills. Students also get an opportunity to lead warm-ups and activities independently. At this level, students may participate in team sports such as football, volleyball, and basketball. Grades are heavily weighted with an emphasis on attitude, participation, and effort, rather than skill.
