Kindred in Kindness

At St. Matthew’s, the Lower School (Kindergarten – 4th Grade) is self-contained in one or two classes and team-taught by master and associate educators who take responsibility for planning, teaching, and monitoring the success of all learners in the class. The team of full-time homeroom teachers work together and share their expertise to build a dynamic learning environment at each grade level. Homeroom teachers have access to breakout rooms, which allows teachers to work with smaller groups and/or individuals.

Our curriculum is rooted in inquiry and subject areas are connected through essential questions that focus on students’ relationship to self and others, culture, and community. Foundational skills in reading, Language Arts, and mathematics, are taught explicitly to build capacity to acquire knowledge, think critically, and communicate understanding in multiple ways. Our curriculum also allows for personalized learning by creating space for individual student questioning, and the curriculum is further enhanced by integrated specialist classes in Science, Art, Library, Innovation, Music, and Physical Education.

Social-emotional learning is woven in throughout the day with regular morning meetings and direct lessons in both intra- and interpersonal skills. The learning environment is both challenging and nurturing, placing strong emphasis on academics as well as building character and learning through service to others. Children in our Lower School develop curiosity, think critically, work collaboratively with others, find joy in learning and solving problems, and express creativity and ingenuity.

Curriculum

In addition to the core subjects taught by homeroom teachers (Language Arts, math and social studies), science, art, music, innovation, library, religion, and physical education are very important elements of the Lower School program. These subjects (listed below), though woven into homeroom activities, are also regularly scheduled each week and taught by teachers, who have professional backgrounds in their specialty.

The school feels like a real life treehouse, filled with playful learners, eager leaders and a community built around a collective love for togetherness. We know our son will thrive in this warm environment that fosters growth, while encouraging the magic of childhood. Thank you for showing us the wonder of St. Matthew’s!

Lower School Highlights

Community Education

Lower School students (Grades K-4) have a rich and diverse range of educational opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, fostering a strong sense of community, curiosity, and hands-on learning. Our students participate in enriching field trips and special programs that allow them to engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. Highlights of their experiences include author visits and field trips to local destinations such as the Rediscover Center, where students explore sustainability through creative, hands-on projects, and Heal the Bay, where they learn about environmental conservation and coastal ecosystems. Students also travel to Sacramento to gain a deeper understanding of California’s history and government through interactive and immersive experiences.

Class Buddies

Lower School students have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with both younger Early Childhood peers and older Middle School students. Through our buddy program, students in Grades K-4 are paired with a buddy, creating strong connections across divisions. These pairs regularly meet for activities, including the annual Teddy Bear Picnic, 8th grade graduation ceremony, and holiday-themed activities.
