Visual Arts
In our Visual Arts Program, students from Kindergarten through 8th Grade work in small groups to develop self-expression and the appreciation of one’s own creativity as well as that of others. In Lower School, our visual arts program complements the overall curriculum by connecting art projects to each grade level’s studies, including science and social studies. Kindergarten students focus on the creative process, self-expression, and exploration. Students build on these skills, enhancing independent and creative thinking, developing work ethic, and independent problem-solving skills. Art project highlights include clay animal sculptures and habitats linked to research reports as well as developing art vocabulary, mask-making for cultural studies and mythology, and creating coil pottery baskets.
In Middle School, 5th and 6th Graders are encouraged to experiment, with a strong emphasis on cross-curricular activities in conjunction with their regular curriculum. Students learn to work on our pottery wheels, and the flexibility within each project allows for creative thinking and imaginative visualization. Students are exposed to and experience basic techniques and explore different mediums. The year culminates in an art show celebrating students’ creativity and effort. 7th Grade students participate in an arts rotation that affords them the opportunity to learn theater, filmmaking, Maker Art, and Studio Art. Once the Spring Musical concludes, 8th Grade students participate in an arts rotation, including ceramics, theater, culinary arts, and filmmaking.
