The History of St. Matthew’s
St. Matthew’s Preschool opened its doors on May 2, 1949 to become the first preschool in Pacific Palisades, California. The following year, St. Matthew’s Parish Day School was established at the same location on Swarthmore Avenue in the Palisades. A few years later, the church and school moved to the Garland Ranch, located off Sunset Boulevard on Bienveneda. This scenic 28-acre site, located just one mile from the Pacific Ocean, has been the location of the Parish of St. Matthew and St. Matthew’s Parish School ever since. The School added Grades 7 and 8 in 1978.
Throughout the School’s seven decades of existence, parishioners, students, and faculty alike have been awestruck by the beauty of our surroundings where deer still wander the campus, students actively engage in learning, and dedicated, caring teachers create innovative lessons each day.

School Traditions
Traditions and school events are integral to the St. Matthew’s experience, creating lasting memories for both students and parents. Explore below some of our cherished traditions that have profoundly shaped our community.
Blue-White Day
Blue-White Day is an annual St. Matthew’s tradition that builds school spirit, provides a spirited day of healthy athletic competition, and creates sports-related opportunities where every student can participate and be successful.
Buddy Program
The Buddy Program fosters meaningful connections between our youngest learners and Middle School students. Throughout the year, buddies join in a variety of fun activities, including buddy lunches, crafts, and reading sessions. This initiative helps younger students build confidence and social skills and allows older students to embrace mentorship roles, creating lasting friendships that enrich their school experience.
Movie on the Meadow
This annual fall tradition at St. Matthew’s, organized by the Parents’ Council, is a fun family event where everyone brings a picnic blanket to enjoy a family-friendly movie. Attendees can indulge in hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy. It’s the first Party Book event of the school year.
Mystery Readers
In our Mystery Reader Program, parents (or special guests!) read a book to the Kindergarten class, while donning themed costumes and the students try and guess who’s behind the disguise.
7th Grade STAR / 8th Grade DEEP
7th graders participate in the STAR program (Shakespeare, Theater, Arts, and the Renaissance) where they read, perform, and analyze a key Shakespeare play culminating in a student-driven project showcased at the San Mateo Renaissance Faire. DEEP (Developing Engineering Excellence Program) offers 8th graders a project-based learning experience that integrates math, science, and technology. Working in small groups, students choose between a scientific method or engineering track to complete research projects.
Teddy Bear Picnic
The Teddy Bear Picnic is a beloved tradition at St. Matthew’s. 1st graders bring their teddy bears for a day of fun, culminating in a blessing at Chapel. Students enjoy a picnic with their 5th grade buddies, sharing sweet and savory treats with their adorably fuzzy friends.
