Little Builders, Big Learning: Exploring Construction Through Play
May 08, 2026

Our Preschool classroom buzzed with excitement as students explored the world of construction, inspired by the rebuilding happening in our own Pacific Palisades community. Students discovered what it means to build, connecting their play to the real work happening around them as our school rebuilds and prepares for our return to our home campus this fall.
In true St. Matthew’s fashion, teachers transformed big ideas into playful, purposeful learning experiences. The classroom became a bustling construction zone where students measured, hammered, and collaborated their way through each task. Through imaginative play, children stepped into the roles of construction workers, architects, and builders, discovering how each job works together as a team to stay safe and accomplish a shared goal.
The unit kicked off with engaging stories about building and construction to spark their creativity and understanding. The classroom dramatic play area became the main construction hub complete with hard hats, vests, tools, signs, and streams of measuring tape. Students rotated through roles and responsibilities, learning how each “job” contributes to a shared goal.
Our young designers learned about the important work architects do, using rulers to measure, drawing lines with care, and planning thoughtful designs and placement. They designed their own “blueprints” of homes, each one uniquely reflecting their ideas and creativity while also building early skills in spatial awareness, problem-solving, and communication. Afterward, they shared the special features they included in their homes.
The engineering excitement continued on the playground where students used large foam blocks to construct a variety of imaginative structures from towers to cozy spaces, working together to test ideas and refine their designs. Inside, a hands-on exploration station with scales, nuts, bolts, and screws introduced concepts of weight, balance, and precision, reinforcing the idea that every detail matters in construction.
This dynamic unit is a wonderful example of how St. Matthew’s Early Childhood program blends academic skill-building with imaginative play. By connecting classroom learning to the world around them, our youngest learners are not only preparing for the future, they’re building it, one creative idea at a time.
