Character Covenant in Practice

December 16, 2024

Since its founding in 1949, St. Matthew’s Parish School has been committed to building character in a purposeful and impactful way. This hallmark program is woven into the fabric of the School’s identity, touching every part of the educational experience. Central to St. Matthew’s approach are the five core values outlined in the Character Covenant, signed by every student: Empathy, Fairness, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. These values are not just ideals, but are actively integrated into daily interactions and lessons. Beyond these core values, St. Matthew’s prioritizes the social and emotional growth of its students. Research shows that social-emotional intelligence boosts academic performance.

By recognizing and addressing emotions such as fear, anger, and joy, students enhance their learning engagement while teachers improve their instructional effectiveness. The school counselor, alongside classroom teachers, ensures that social and emotional learning is a key component of the curriculum across all grade levels. This integrated approach helps nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared for both academic success and personal growth. St. Matthew’s commitment to upholding the Character Covenant not only enriches the students’ academic journey, but also prepares them for a lifetime of meaningful interactions and contributions to their communities.
