SMPS Teachers’ Dedication To Our Students

September 17, 2025

As St. Matthew’s students returned for the new academic year, they were greeted by classrooms and learning spaces that had been lovingly prepared by dedicated teachers who spent countless hours ensuring every detail would foster learning, belonging, and joy. Our teachers created an atmosphere where learning can truly flourish.

Our Early Childhood teachers experience the joy of welcoming new students starting their journey at St. Matthew’s. “We think carefully about the experiences we will offer, the curiosity and wonder we will nurture, and the sense of belonging we must create. Intentionally arranging the furniture and materials creates a warm, welcoming “home away from home.”  In Lower School, our Kindergarten teachers’ goal is for students to feel loved and welcome, preparing a warm, inviting classroom with open space. “Not having desks is important for us. Children instead have centers tables where they can collaborate with each other.”

St. Matthew’s teachers also keep curriculum and structure in mind when conceptualizing their individual spaces. Our 2nd grade teachers designed their classroom to feel cheerful and bright, with cozy nooks for reading and relaxing with ocean-themed decorations that connect to their first social studies unit. In 4th grade, morning meetings—a daily ritual that sets the tone for community and collaboration – takes place on a cozy rug in the lower school library. In the classroom, students sit in pods to encourage collaboration and peer learning.  Our Lower School Science Teacher, who has taught at St. Matthew’s for over 25 years, builds in different areas in her classroom, some for hands-on activities, some for group work, and some for quiet focus, so everyone can find a way to learn that works for them. “My hope is that they walk in knowing this is their space, that they belong, and that it’s okay to take risks, try new things, and make mistakes.”

For one of our middle school English teachers, the core of all of these decisions is the driving question – “What will best serve my students?” She aims to promote academic discourse, note taking skills, and a deeper understanding of the content, and her classroom reflects these priorities. Flexible seating options are especially important for when students are working independently. “My desks will be in groups if we’re going to be having discussions or I’ll rearrange them into a circle for a Socratic Seminar.”

The library is the heart of the school—a place where students come to read, play, work on puzzles, laugh with friends, and simply be themselves. Our librarians invested considerable time and care in creating spaces that truly reflect students and their voices. “We build displays around what excites them, feature books that represent diverse experiences and perspectives, and showcase student work at every opportunity. Our ultimate goal is for students to feel genuine ownership of this space a place where imagination and connection can flourish.”
