Environmental Health & Safety
A Q&A for St. Matthew’s Parish School & Village School
As we continue our return to the Palisades and look ahead to the rebuilding of our community, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority.
We know families have important questions about air quality, soil, water, construction, and the long-term environmental health of our campus. We also know that wildfire recovery is an evolving process, and that new information will continue to emerge as rebuilding moves forward.
Our approach is straightforward: we want to make decisions based on the best available science, work with trusted experts, monitor conditions over time, and communicate openly with our community about what we know and what we are still learning.
Our Partners and Experts
We are fortunate to be able to draw on the expertise of several organizations and individuals who are deeply involved in understanding the environmental and health impacts of the 2025 Los Angeles fires.
-
LA Fire HEALTH Study / UCLA: We are partnering with the Los Angeles Fire Human Exposure and Long-Term Health Study (LA Fire HEALTH Study), a 10-year, multi-institutional research effort founded by the Spiegel Family Fund studying environmental exposures and the short- and long-term health effects of the Los Angeles fires.
-
Dr. Kari Nadeau, now Dean of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is a co-leader of the LA Fire HEALTH Study. Her work focuses extensively on environmental health, wildfire exposure, and the health impacts of environmental pollutants.
-
CONSORTIUM: We are also collaborating with CONSORTIUM, a cross-sector initiative bringing together top scientists, researchers, and community partners to help fire-affected families understand and address environmental risks in their homes and soil with science-backed, practical tools, guidance, and direct support. CONSORTIUM’s founding members have a track record of impactful fire recovery work since immediately post-fires in 2025, including CAP.LA (founded by the R&S Kayne Foundation), USC Public Exchange, Department of Angels, LMU Center for the Study of Los Angeles, and LA Fire HEALTH Study.
These partnerships give us access to a broad range of scientific, public-health, environmental, and community expertise as we make informed decisions about our campus.
